New Year, Fresh Start

Happy New Year! 2020 was the longest and shortest year at the same time. It started off normal. This time last year, I saw tons of posts about everyone’s “word of the new year,” along with plans for new routines, resolutions and becoming a better person. Who knew an actual pandemic would press us to shift and make changes like never before. Home became the workplace, school setting and everything in between. Days and weeks and months started to blend together. Many of us questioned if we would make it to see the ball drop this year.

I, like others have lost friends, family and neighbors this year. We watched the racial climate spike and pretty much explode this summer. The constant flux of the pandemic created some interesting new routines:

  • Wearing a mask every damn place. Coordinating outfits around it.

  • Clapping and cheering like clockwork every evening for our precious essential workers.

  • Staring at and side eye-rolling every crazy party or gathering of large, unmasked groups.

  • Spending an unhealthy amount of time on Zoom, face-time, teams, etc.

So now we have a new year. Even though there were some positives that I’m grateful for, I don’t feel really interested in doing lot of flashbacks and curated posts of the “best of 2020.” The greatest achievement of this past year for most was surviving. I learned more than ever, to embrace grace, to relinquish the idea of having control of everything, or anything for that matter, and being O.K. with the fact that things aren’t perfect.

I believe moving on into 2021 with gratitude and a feeling of resilience is the best plan. I’ve made a commitment to not give up on myself and to invest in my self-improvement. I’m not fooled at all. We are still in a pandemic, and a new year is not a guarantee of better days. Treating myself well, trying to live life to the fullest, being kind to everyone I love, while being flexible are my goals.

Cheers and best wishes for a prosperous and healthy New Year!
